A few times it comes up that Charlie held up a candy store and spent two years in juvenile detention, there is some off-screen gang activity, and Charlie and a few others are casually cruel to Lafayette. Certainly throughout the book there are moments teachers might want to be aware of in advance. The opening scene involves Charlie ranking various groups by their “badness” or gang affiliation. She did not disappoint.īased on the opening lines though, what did greatly surprise me was that this book was appropriate for middle grade readers. This was a free book choice I made a while ago, knowing nothing about the title (I didn’t even have time to read the blurb) but simply trusting Jacqueline Woodson as a consistently excellent author. Oldest brother Ty’ree had to give up his dream to keep the family together, middle boy Charlie is consumed with guilt that he was away when she died, and Lafayette is engulfed by grief and trauma. The focus is on Leah, the youngest of the clan, a smart and ambitious modern young lady. Like an Ellis Island story, this one is the New World of South America, specifically Argentina. I thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of an aristocratic Jewish family forced to escape the pogroms of Russia in the 1900’s to the great, wild, uncertain and hopeful New World. Destiny by Design, Leah’s Journey is a beautiful story, RICHLY told, that must be heard. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Riftwar seriesThe only author who he has more detail than is Anne McCaffrey (of the majors of course). Realism? in an REF book? you can't be serious in thinking that theres any more realism in his works compared to any of the major fantasy authors around. They lack discription and are very predictable, and the dialogue often seems.childish. I don't know why, but I was very annoyed that they called these invaders by their name for themselves, seems like if you get invaded by aliens you'll probably call them aliens, not Vogmatorgen or whatever.ĭespite this flaw, I do like the main character and his best friend, but the rest of the characters seem to be very boring. They hear that there 'might' be an invading army in the mountains, and they wtf freak out. I almost forgot, the main plot is underdeveloped. I almost pulled my hair out when he was allowed to hear some rediculously sensitive and confidential information just because "We won't look suspicious if we have the kid with us." Some kid, barely above a peasant, saves a princess, and is automatically elevated to the status of a lord? There are a lot of things like this. Looks like I'm going to barely finish the first book, then look for something better. I'd heard how great this series was, so after finishing Hobb's Farseer Trilogy (great trilogy), I broke down and bought the first two books. HarrisSebastian's investigation takes on new urgency when he discovers that Emma was not the first, or even the second, beautiful young woman in the village to die under suspicious circumstances. Held captive under the British government's watchful eye, the younger Bonaparte is restless, ambitious, and treacherous. Also troubling are the machinations of Lucien Bonaparte, the estranged brother of the megalomaniac French Emperor Napoleon. For as Sebastian and Hero soon discover, Emma was hiding both her true identity and her real reasons for traveling to Ayleswick. Less easy to discern is exactly how she died, and why. Cyr for help.Īlmost immediately, Sebastian realizes that Emma Chance did not, in truth, take her own life. But when the body of a lovely widow is found on the banks of the River Teme, a bottle of laudanum at her side, the village's inexperienced new magistrate turns to St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, has come to this seemingly peaceful Shropshire village to honor a slain friend and on a quest to learn more about his own ancestry. It’s an apt title in many respects, given some of the hardships and sorrows experienced by our characters in the story, but also because of the bittersweetness I felt as one of my favorite mystery thriller series had to conclude this way. Heartbreak Bay is the fifth and final Stillhouse Lake novel and also the last book written by Rachel Caine before she sadly passed away from cancer last year. The number of paranormal romances published each and every year involving werewolves is staggering! Simply searching for werewolf romance books online just about put me over the edge. While any sort of paranormal beings (werewolves, vampires, bear shifters, demons, etc.) may not be everyone’s cup of tea, these werewolf books have an incredibly large following. See? Werewolf books are a guaranteed mood booster. It also doesn’t hurt that the fated mates trope-and therefore werewolf romances-is almost always higher up there on the heat level, since the character’s bodies recognize the need to get it on ASAP. There is something so deliciously decadent about big bad werewolves being absolutely powerless to love and their preordained mate. Much of my obsession with werewolf romance books comes via the fated mates trope that almost always permeates these paranormal books. Whenever I need a book that is guaranteed to delight or something to pull me out of a reading slump, werewolf romances are my very first choice. Werewolf romance novels are my comfort reads. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Original bambi storyFor, as this elegant, uncompromising new translation by the American academic Jack Zipes (with suitably shadowy illustrations by Alenka Sottler) makes clear, it is not really a children’s book at all.īambi, along with Felix Salten’s other works, was on a list of books banned by the Nazis in 1935 He had fled to neutral Switzerland from his homeland of Austria because - as it may surprise some to learn - Bambi, along with Salten’s other works, was on a list of books banned by the Nazis in 1935. Salter never saw a penny of the Disney movie’s global success and died alone, forgotten, in exile. The original author did less well out of his gambolling creation. The resulting 1942 forest fantasia, which leaps in swooning bounds from one extravagantly coloured and orchestrated natural history lesson to another, was nominated for three Oscars, and by 2005 had grossed $102 million. ‘Suppose we have Bambi step on an ant hill,’ he offered at one script meeting, ‘and then cut away to see all the damage he’s done to the ant civilisation?’ After the Austrian author Felix Salten sold the rights to his 1923 bestseller Bambi for a paltry $1,000, Walt is reputed to have suggested myriad unhelpful plot additions to the simple story. The extent of Walt Disney’s grasp of the natural world remains unclear. The Fall season set also will include Sense and Sensibility, Dracula, and The Shakespeare Collection.
